Yasir Khan is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, educator, and digital media consultant. He was, until recently, head of digital video, social platforms and podcasts at Al Jazeera English.
Yasir built AJE's social video team from the ground up and was named the Online Media Awards' Editor of the Year in 2016. He also created and launched AJE's weekly podcast The Debrief.
Prior to this, as AJE's senior producer of programmes, Yasir directed award-winning films including the world's first feature documentary shot entirely on mobile phones - Syria: Songs of Defiance.
Yasir honed his storytelling craft at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, in both radio and television. As one of the CBC's first video journalists, his work took him around the world, from the Canadian Arctic, to Hugo Chavez's Venezuela, to the Hajj in Saudi Arabia, to the Sri Lankan civil war.
Yasir currently lives in the idyllic Canadian Maritimes, from where he advises publishers, media companies and documentary and podcast projects on storytelling and all matters digital.
“I choose not to be a "next big thing" person, but rather a "perpetual big thing" person. For me, the two biggest perpetual things are storytelling and audience. No matter the trend, getting to know your audience and telling them good stories is always going to be crucial. Get a handle on those, and you've got a handle on everything else.”
